Primary School Level - Most Enterprising Student

Offaly Primary School Students Rewarded for Enterprising Spirit
June 2010

Primary school pupils around Offaly have been recognised for their entrepreneurial abilities by the Offaly County Enterprise Board as part of its "Most Enterprising Student" initiative.

Now in its twelfth year this awards scheme is designed to introduce the concept of enterprise to primary school children.

Under the programme every school in the county has the opportunity to nominate their “Most Enterprising Student”. The student can have achieved anything – very often they may run their own mini-business, be very creative or have shown determination, initiative, leadership or other skills. It offers schools an opportunity to give recognition to a student who inspires, is enterprising or excels in other ways.

The students who received the awards this year were truly enterprising. Some of the businesses set up and run by the students included selling eggs, walking dogs, handmade jewellery, clothes design, and raising a huge sum of money for the school charity by selling food, toys and gifts as part of the school Enterprise Day.

This year a record 26 schools around the county entered the competition and have been visited by Offaly County Enterprise Board with certificates being presented to the winning students. Each student also received a prize pack including a €50 book token.

This year all nominating schools were entered into a draw for a prize of a SMART interactive whiteboard valued at over €4,000. This prize was sponsored by Offaly County Enterprise Board, who through the generous assistance of SMART Technologies and their partner Go Interactive Ltd. was able to offer this fantastic prize to one lucky school. The draw for the prize took place at Offaly County Enterprise Board’s meeting in May and Ballyboy National School, just outside Kilcormac, was the lucky winner.

The SMART interactive whiteboard was presented to Ballyboy National School on Thursday last 10th June by Mr. Pat Gallagher, Offaly County Manager and Chairperson of Offaly County Enterprise Board. The system is now in use in the school, and is already proving to be an invaluable tool within the classroom.
